PROJECTS:

Canopy Project

May 17th

The booster club has scheduled mid-June to begin construction on the 24x36 wooden canopy at the high school track. The canopy will be located between the concession stand and the restrooms. The purpose for the new addition is to create a dry, safe area for our student athletes during the rainy season. It will also provide an additional area for concession workers who find it necessary to cook outdoors.

Cost for the project is approximately $10,000.00. Through grants and other donations, the booster club has managed to raise $6,500.00 which will cover the total cost of materials. The remaining $3,500.00 is actually an in-kind service and is the responsibility of the booster club.

If you have some free time around mid-June, please don't hesitate to contact one of the following project managers: Jim Chambers, Nic Dahl and Roy Kinion. Remember, if you don't volunteer they will come looking for you!

See you there!

Dear Sir;

The Toledo Boomer Booster membership is very enthusiastic about the success we’ve had this past year. With the efforts of so many wonderful people who have donated hundreds of hours, our accomplishments are at an all time high.

We firmly believe the efforts from both the Booster Club membership along with the Toledo High School staff to promote excellence, pride and good sportsmanship, have not gone unnoticed. This is evidence by a dramatic increase in membership combined with staff and student participation.

We, of course, have a long way to go. We understand that our expectations for another successful year is largely dependent on our ability to establish a strong working relationship with the Lincoln County School District. As you well know, the cornerstone for future success must include mutual support and active communication between our two organizations. With your help, we can continue to focus on heightening the positive experience of being an athlete and promoting community values in our students.

For your review, please find attached a list describing projects that are crucial to next year. It is our hope that by forwarding these request at this early date, it will allow you time to incorporate them into your summer maintenance program. We would welcome the opportunity to meet with you or your representative to assist in coordinating these efforts.

If you have any questions regarding the attachments or request, please feel free to contact me during the day at the Toledo High School or by telephone at 272-1857.

Sincerely,

Babe Brown

TRACK:

The track at Toledo High school has received little maintenance over the past ten years. The running surface is in desperate need of resurfacing or replacement. Over the years rain has penetrated the asphalt to the point of causing linear lines of separation resulting in an uneven and unsightly surface. We have received comments from students, coaches and visiting schools regarding the poor condition of the running surface.

Because of the overall condition of the track, we request that any planned repair or maintenance be assigned the highest priority and also ask that the Toledo sports facilities be included in any future short or long term goal setting. We are hopeful a solution can be found before it becomes a safety issue.

To prepare our track for next season, stripping in absolutely necessary and our plan to install a pole vault pit will most definitely require some assistance from the school district. (Temporary Pole Vault Pit completed Spring of 2006.)

BASEBALL/SOFTBALL:

The softball complex is nearing completion. Only a few items remain unfinished. The building passed county inspection early this year and volunteers from the booster club have since installed the interior overhead lights. What remains is the electrical work, which will require a licensed electrician. Power needs to be ran from the nearby concession stand to the softball complex. The trench and the conduit are in and we are now waiting for the school districts electrician to connect the two.
Equally important is to relocate the score board and bathroom power switches from inside the concession stand to a more suitable location.(Top priority to be done before March 2008)

Over the past several years volunteers have worked long and hard to improve the playing surface of both the baseball/softball fields. It is comforting June 4, 2010 has been accomplished to correct the on going drainage problem. Both fields (particularly the softball field) are not useable with only the slightest hint of rain. Coaches and volunteers alike have concluded, to displace the standing water, both playing fields will require several drainage lines.
Other items needing attention at the softball complex are hanging the batting nets and painting inside and out.

FOOTBALL:

The major issue facing our football field has always been drainage. With only a thin layer of topsoil covering a clay undersurface, combining the slightest of field active with any measurable rain, the result is always the same, a large quagmire. With a good drainage system and a sounded maintenance program, not only will we have a great football field, it would also allow us to share our facility with the Jr. League and other community organizations.

Dear Ms. Brown,

Thanks for your letter of May 4th. It's great to have the Toledo Boosters with their enthusiastic support of the Toledo Schools.

My staff and myself are very interested to keep working with and improving relations with the Toledo Booster Club. I reviewed your list and would like to meet with your representatives for track, baseball, softball and football.

Some things to think about on each:

Track - Is in very poor shape as you pointed out. We have in the past done some preliminary investigation. Atlas track is the only vendor in the state of Oregon that I know of. They visited Toledo 2 years ago I believe. Their estimation at that time was the track needed to be completely redone. There was not a repair for it. At that time a rough estimate was over $100,000.00. I agree doing nothing will just increase the cost.

Softball, Baseball - Boosters built the shed and installed the concrete apron. LCSD paid for the siding and lights and has installed conduit from the existing concession stand to the new hitting cage. Finishing the wiring to the lights, pulling wire and relocating switches is on the electrician's summer projects list. Over the past few years the district has installed several drain lines in the softball field. This has not been very successful and more drain lines can be installed with your help and input.

Football - The field design called for drain lines and they were installed approximately 20' apart in a herringbone style. As with all the fields in Lincoln County School District, the dirt and clay will not let water pass thru. We have this problem in every field we have. We have even gone to seminars with Thomas Cook of OSU. There were few good answers. The best seems to be to try to build the field up with sand. The idea is to add 1/4" sand each month then let the grass grow. The next month, repeat. Our plan for this year is to add 1/4" of sand in May, June, July and August. We are open to other ideas and all help is appreciated.

I suggest that we meet and go over each project. I am very open the week of the 21st. Let me know when you would like to get together.
