Booster Award given to one recipient for each sport. Tom Walker, THS Class of 1954Tom was, during the early 1950's, an inspiration to the Toledo Community. He was a young man that had spent his youth growing up in Toledo during and following the Second World War these were certainly flourishing days for Toledo... businesses prospered, logging and lumbering were big, and Toledo was the center of activity...the seat of Lincoln County. Like most kids, Tom spent endless hours on the playground of Old Stanton School on the top of the hill on 2nd St. In those days most activity was 'free play' and competition solved problems between participants. There weren't the organized activities of today's world. Tom established himself as a tough, competitive athlete and through his high school career, built a reputation as a great athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. But most noteworthy was his ability to overcome a 'tough' home life; to value the rewards of academic success and move persistently toward a goal to be a productive citizen. He graduated from Toledo High School in 1954 and obtained many athletic honors. At that time, there was only one classification in high school athletics in oregon, and Tom was selected to play in the annual Shrine Game, in Portland. Toledo High School coach, Vince Dulchich, and local dentist, Kernan Baird, were instrumental in Tom's receiving a full athletic scholarship to Oregon State College (now Oregon State University) in Corvallis, to play football. Tom relished the opportunity and stayed in that program for one year, but the academic challenge and pursuit of a dream took him to the newly established Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was a great move for Tom ...he played in the Cotton Bowl his senior year and graduated from an outstanding service academy. Most importantly, he became a great citizen. His persistence in realizing his dream and better his life ...overcoming great obstacles, was a lesson to many: and his memory is of value today. Tom Walker was an early casualty in the Vietnam Conflict. He was shot down returning from a bombing mission over Cambodia.
2008 - 2009 Coach of the YearBruce Marthaller Toledo JR/SR High School Football Coach Steve Brattain had the following to say: I have been working with Bruce since 2000 when I joined the football staff at Toledo High School and Bruce was already on the staff. Bruce was young, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and great with the kids. As we have worked together over the next eight years, I have watched Bruce grow. In those eight years I have watched a young man mature into not just a tremendous coach, but into a tremendous teacher. Bruce understands that athletics and coaching is not simply about kids learning to play well, it is more than winning or losing games. Bruce is a true “Boomer”. He has for many years been the head Girls Basketball Coach. He was, for several years, the Head Girls Softball Coach. A few years ago Bruce became the “Co-Head Coach” for the football program…well deserved due to his dedication to the team and sport and because of the overall input he had in the total scheme(s) of the program. His dedication to Toledo student-athletes has never been questioned. What has become very evident is his skill and dedication as a teacher and the understanding he has of the tasks and responsibilities that come with the title “coach”. While Bruce has always given his all when it comes to coaching his teams/players and has spent countless hours game planning, what I now see in Bruce is a coach who cares about the success of his players on a deeper level. He insists they strive for success not just on the playing fields but in every arena and are solid citizens first and foremost. He holds his players accountable and is willing to make tough decisions based on a players’ adherence to policy/rules rather than based on what might produce a win. He views his players and his program(s) in the long term rather than in the “here and now”. Under Bruce’s direction this years Girls Basketball team very nearly upset the Burns girls basketball team who eventually won the state basketball championship. His Boomers played a great game on their opponents’ home court, nearly 400 miles from Toledo. While they lost the game on the scoreboard (though they gave that team the closest game they would have in the tournament), they won the respect of the home crowd for the courage, class, dignity and sportsmanship they exhibited. After the game, the team received many congratulations from the Burns’ home fans who were impressed with the Boomer team. I would expect nothing less from any team coached by Bruce Marthaller…representing Toledo High School in the highest terms.

2006 -2007 Coach of the Year - Ron BeckhamToledo High Boys Basketball Coach Brad Beckham & Ron's son had the following to say: I have played basketball in the army, for community colleges, at a 4 year university, and with out a doubt Ron Beckham is the most knowledgeable, gracious, and talented basketball coach I have ever played for. His knowledge of the game is monumental, but more important is his constant humble attitude in the realization that the game can not be mastered. You cannot beat the game; you can only hope to contain it. He has served this community as a teacher and a coach for almost 30 years. That is very impressive considering I can barley hold a job for more than 6 months. At home, on the court, or in the classroom, Ron Beckham is constantly coaching. He takes pleasure in passing his many wisdoms on to younger generations. When he is finished he should take solace in the fact that he has affected thousands of lives. Actually, he is pretty old, that number could be more in the millions. If I had to do it all over again in selecting a coach, a father, or a friend; Ron Beckham would remain Ron Beckham. Let’s give a round of applause to our coach. His loud screams and constant encouragement will last a life time. 2005-2006 Coach of the Year - Janet Johnson
